Dr Chris Hope, Reader in Policy Modelling at Cambridge Judge Business School, says the issues of deforestation and financial compensation to encourage developing countries to protect their forests must be addressed at the Copenhagen talks. He argues deforestation is costing the world tens of trillions of dollars in its impacts and although geo-engineering devices can be used to redress CO2 emissions, the cheaper option is to prevent the tropical forests from being destroyed in the first place.
